I started Irving as a way to explore the people, businesses, history, and culture of Gramercy, the NYC neighborhood I call home. What began as an idea for a small print publication quickly became a much bigger project: reporting and writing stories, photographing the neighborhood, developing the visual identity, designing each issue, working with local advertisers and contributors, managing production and distribution, and figuring out all the details in between.
Print offered a different kind of experience from the constant stream of digital content. Each issue is designed to give readers a reason to slow down — to discover something about the neighborhood, spend time with a story, or notice a business they might otherwise walk past.
Irving: A neighborhood magazine built from the ground up
Building Irving from the ground up has also given me the opportunity to experience every side of running a small independent publication. There are decisions at every step, and when you've built something yourself, even the small ones can feel significant. It has been an ongoing exercise in editorial judgment, design, and problem-solving.
Irving is published quarterly and is available throughout Gramercy.
